Monticello nearly upsets Wis. Heights, Darlington wins

BLACK EARTH - Monticello played their hearts out and came up just short against one of the state's better teams (and players) dropping a non-conference game 53-44 to Wisconsin Heights.

Ali Wilkinson, sister of former Wisconsin men's hoops star Mike Wilkinson, is one of the top seniors in the state. Earlier in the season, Wilkinson dumped 27 points on New Glarus. The Ponies held her to just 14 points.

Sarah Silver had the job of guarding Wilkinson, as well as working the post on offense. Silver finished with a team-high 16 points.

"We've been working on out defense, picking off at the perimeter and helping in the post," Monticello head coach Paul Wedig said. "Sarah played very well guarding Wilkinson."

Monticello trailed 18-11 after the first quarter, but brought the score back to within a possession by halftime at 25-23.

"We've made big strides as a team. The kids played well on both defense and offense," Wedig said.

In the second half, the Vanguards pulled away from the Ponies.

Haley Blum had nine points for Monticello (2-5, 1-2 Six Rivers East). Sophomore Taylor Pfeuti had eight points and junior Sadi Hilliard finished with seven.

Kaia Friske led Wisconsin Heights (7-1, 2-0 Capitol South) with 26 points.

Darlington 61, Southwestern 33

Defense led the Darlington girls basketball team to a 61-33 rout of Southwestern Friday night.

The Redbirds (6-2, 2-1 SWAL) held Southwestern without a field goal for more than eight minutes.

The Redbirds' offense started slow, but built a 28-17 lead at halftime.

"Offensively, I think we struggled a little bit," Darlington coach Kurt Cohen said. "Defense helped us create some shots."

Darlington sophomore Elizabeth Mathias scored a team-high 12 points and fellow sophomore Kelsey Fink added nine.

In a balanced offensive attack Miranda Wiegel, Ashley Martin and Kelsi Blosch each scored eight points.

The Redbirds shot 30 free throws.

"That is always one of our goals," Cohen said about getting to the foul line.

Belmont 60, Juda 50

BELMONT - Larissa Klemm had 11 points for the Panthers, but Belmont was just too tough for Juda on Friday night.

The Panthers kept the score close in the first quarter, but trailed 16-14 headed into the second. By halftime, the deficit had climbed to 34-25.

Juda started a spurt in the third, closing the gap to five points before Belmont finished the game in the fourth.

Heather Boeke had eight points for the Panthers (4-3, 1-3 Six Rivers South) before fouling out of the game. Sara Carey (15 points), Chelsey Schobert (14), and Kassi Kamps (12) led the way for Belmont (5-2, 4-0 Six Rivers West).
