PARDEEVILLE - The Monticello girls basketball team picked up a one-point, 42-41 non-conference win over Pardeeville Tuesday night.
It was a back-and-forth game, but Pardeeville missed a three-pointer at the end to give Monticello the win.
"It was just a game that kind of changed hands a lot, especially getting into the second quarter," said Monticello coach Lori Brokopp. "It was close the entire second half. Pardeeville had the ball the last minute. They called a timeout and milked the time going for the last shot. Our defense really held up. They took a three-pointer, but we were in their face and it went wide. Defensively, I thought we played very well."
Amy Silver led the Ponies with 12 points. Marissa Berg was the other Pony in double figures with 11 points.
"Silver really came out and she was very active inside the paint," said Brokopp. "She had all four shots at the elbow, and was also 4 for 4 at the free throw line. She was not only hitting shots, but getting fouled inside and going to the line. I thought she was a big asset.
"Samantha DeVoe only had six, but I would consider her our spark tonight. She had a few steals, which got the momentum going our way . She played pretty good 'D'."
Monticello improved to 15-5 overall. The Ponies are 8-2 in the Six Rivers East and take on Black Hawk on Thursday.
NEW GLARUS 43, CAMBRIDGE 39
NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus girls basketball team pulled out a 43-39 win over Cambridge to take sole possession of second place in the Capitol South Conference Tuesday night.
New Glarus junior Sierra Watrud scored a team-high 12 points and junior Courtney Feller added 11 points. New Glarus (11-7, 7-2 Capitol South) broke the game open, outscoring the Blue jays 15-5 in the second quarter.
"That got us rolling," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said. "We were sluggish in the second half. We finished strong. They got controlled and got it done."
The Knights still have an outside shot of sharing the conference title with Marshall (15-4, 8-1), but they will need some help. The Knights will have to beat Wisconsin Heights on Thursday and they need Marshall to lose to Columbus Feb. 21.
