ALBANY - The Monticello girls basketball team started strong and didn't look back on their way to a 52-24 victory Thursday over Albany.
The Ponies used a press and capitalized off of several early turnovers committed by the Comets (1-6) en route to a 21-point halftime lead.
"It (the press) gave Albany some trouble," Monticello coach Lori Brokopp said. "We were able to execute, get some steals and turn them into points. "The girls played with a lot of confidence and focus which we have been working hard at."
Monticello junior Alyssah Kubly scored a team-high 15 points to lead the Ponies. Juniors Samantha DeVoe and Jordan Garrison each scored eight points and senior Marissa Berg added seven followed by junior Courtney Leuzinger with six points. With the win, Monticello improves to 4-2, 2-2 Six Rivers East.
Sydnee Woyak and Marley Malkow led the way for the Comets with six points apiece.
Monticello will be back in action at the Cambridge tournament Friday, Dec. 27.
