SUN PRAIRIE - The Monticello girls basketball team's postseason run came to an end with a 49-32 loss to Fall River in a WIAA Division 5 sectional semifinal at Sun Prairie High School Thursday.
"No one can take away their regional championship trophy," Monticello coach Lori Brokopp said. "It belongs to them as a Monticello Pony. No one can take away their accomplishments. They all had great careers."
Monticello (15-10) started out strong and was tied with No. 4-ranked Fall River at 10 early in the first quarter. The Pirates went on a 7-0 run to end the period to take a 17-10 lead. Fall River (23-3) used a 13-2 run that spanned into the second quarter to open up a 23-12 lead.
The Ponies answered. Monticello senior Alyssah Kubly drilled a 3-pointer late in the second quarter to cut the Pirates' lead to 23-17. Despite Kubly picking up three fouls in the first half and seniors Samantha DeVoe and Courtney Leuzinger picking up two fouls in the first half, the Ponies trailed the Pirates by just eight points at the half, 25-17.
"We missed some bunnies in the first half that could have made it closer," Brokopp said. "To be only down eight points at halftime, I wasn't displeased. I knew it would have been closer if we had taken care of the basketball better and made our bunnies."
After Kubly's 3-pointer late in the second quarter, the Pirates responded with a 27-8 run to take control of the game. Fall River switched between man and a 1-2-2 zone trapping defense.
"They got us out of the flow of our offense," Brokopp said. "It took us some time to set up our offense to see what they were in. They came out and put some pressure on us and we made some uncharacteristic mistakes picking up our dribble in spots we didn't want to. They (Fall River) played tough."
Kubly scored a team-high 13 points, but fouled out in the second half. Monticello senior Jordan Garrison added six points.
