JEFFERSON - The Monroe High School boys No. 1 doubles team of junior Kody Althaus and senior Tanner Purdy had to dig deep in the first set, but they pulled off their first win of the season Friday against Jefferson.
Jefferson defeated Monroe as a team in the dual match 5-2, but the Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team displayed some resiliency.
Althaus and Purdy led 5-0 in the first set before Jefferson's Marcus Thoma and Bryant Bare rallied to win two games. Monroe captured the first set 6-2 by winning a dramatic 20-deuce game. The Cheesemakers' duo survived in the second set 7-5.
"It was a great win for No. 1 doubles today," Monroe coach Ashley Hermanson said. "In the second set, games went back and forth and a lot ended up in deuce. Kody and Tanner fought hard and dug deep to pull off the set 7-5."
The other win for the Cheesemakers (0-5) came at No. 1 singles from Monroe junior Silas Setterstrom, who defeated Jefferson's Ryan Messer 6-1, 6-0.
"It was a slower paced match, which was hard for Setterstrom to adjust to in the beginning," Hermanson said. "He began putting more pace on the ball and points were finished quicker."
At No. 2 singles, Monroe junior Ryan Peterson lost to Jefferson's Cole Fredrich 6-2, 6-1.
"The score does not do him justice with how he played," Hermanson said of Peterson. "He was able to rally with his opponent for quite some time but was unable to finish a lot of points in his favor."
Jefferson's Blake Drays at No. 3 singles beat Monroe's Scott Foley 6-1, 6-1. Jefferson's Tyler Seisser at No. 4 singles defeated Monroe's Ben Dombkoswki 6-0, 6-1.
At No. 2 doubles, Jefferson's Alex Anason and Sam Meyers beat Monroe's Brett Lyne and Ryan Stoneback 6-1, 6-3. The Cheesemakers' No. 3 doubles team of Devon Schulte and Chase Schulte dropped a match to Jefferson's Zach Hoffman and Tim Felton 6-2, 6-1.
