MADISON - It was a tough day for the Monroe boys tennis team at the Badger Conference tournament Thursday at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Monroe lost four matches to singles players and doubles teams they had beat earlier this season. The only flight still left in the conference tournament is the Cheesemakers' No. 2 doubles team of senior Jeremy Miller and sophomore Kody Althaus. Miller and Althaus will play a semifinal match against Madison Edgewood today.
"It was a disappointing day for our team," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Last year, at the end of the season, the roles were reversed and we pulled out a lot of upsets against people who had beaten us earlier in the season. We just came out flat today and didn't do what we needed to do. As a team, we have to come out with more focus and more energy at subsectionals."
After receiving a first-round bye, Miller and Althaus at No. 2 doubles defeated Sauk Prairie's No. 2 doubles team 7-6 (3), 6-1. After winning a tie-breaker in the first set, Miller and Althaus cruised in the second set.
"Jeremy and Kody did what needed to be done," Saugstad said. "They hit a lot of first serves, hit solid returns and put the ball away."
Monroe senior David Shon at No. 1 singles defeated Baraboo's Michael Tenamore 6-0, 6-0. Monona Grove's Christian Docter then defeated Shon 6-2, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, Monroe sophomore Silas Setterstrom beat Fort Atkinson's Tanner Bakken 6-3, 6-2. Waunakee's Austin Zellner then knocked off Setterstrom 7-5, 6-2.
Milton's Jordan Shore at No. 3 singles defeated Monroe senior Zach Hendrickson 6-3, 6-1 and Reedsburg's Logan Penkwitz at No. 4 singles beat Monroe senior Rhett Katzenberger 6-2, 7-5.
After a first-round bye, the Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of seniors Kevin Noriega and Matt Monahan lost to Oregon top doubles team 7-6 (6), 6-3. Baraboo's Pat Neugarth and Kenny Armstrong defeated Monroe's Cole Oudinot and Keyton Friske 6-4, 6-2.
