MADISON - The Monroe No. 1 doubles team of seniors Kevin Noriega and Matt Monahan won a first-round match at the WIAA Division 2 state tennis tournament and will move on to the second round.

Noriega and Monahan defeated Dominican's Alex Jensen and George Wong 6-4, 7-5 Thursday. With the win, Noriega and Monahan (19-7) advance to the second-round today where they will play Kohler's Noah Fink and Archie Brohn at 11:30 a.m. at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Fink and Brohn are seeded eighth in the state tournament.

Monroe senior David Shon at No. 1 singles had his season come to an end with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Plymouth's Matt Primozic.

"They have a lot of confidence," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Getting the first-round win was big for us. The seeded team has all of the pressure on them. We can just play loose and have fun."

Noriega and Monahan jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set and withstood a comeback from Jensen and Wong.

"It was important to get off to a great start because Dominican had a lot of momentum," Saugstad said.

Jensen and Wong led 3-2 in the second set. Monahan had a long serving run that included multiple deuces to win a key point. Wong then double faulted on the serve twice and the Cheesemakers won three straight points to come back and take a 5-4 lead.

"It was huge to take the lead late in the set," Saugstad said.

Shon at No. 1 singles played a close match against Primozic in the first-round at state. It's the third time in the last two years Primozic has defeated Shon.

"David played really well," Saugstad said. "He was using his strategy well to hit the ball deep and make the kid play the baseline. He (Primozic) is a solid player. For David to play him that well, it was a solid match."
