OREGON - The Monroe girls basketball team was looking to knock off one of the top teams in the Badger South Conference for the second time in three days.
Oregon senior Riley Rosemeyer scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Panthers to a 56-40 win over Monroe Thursday. Rosemeyer scored six points in the first quarter to help the Panthers outscore the Cheesemakers 19-7. The Cheesemakers rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit in the second half.
"They were able to get a fullcourt press on us early," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "They did a good job with that. We did cut it to eight in the third quarter, but they pushed it back up on us in the fourth. They pushed the tempo and got us with the turnovers, which they turned into baskets and layups."
Monroe sophomore Lexi Hilliard scored a team-high 11 points and senior Alacia Keegan added 10 points. With the loss, Monroe drops to 7-12, 2-8 Badger South.
Two days after scoring a game-high 25 points to lead the Cheesemakers to a win over Monona Grove, Monroe junior Brooke Adams missed the game due to illness. Monroe sophomore Jordan Hirsbrunner stepped into the starting lineup.
"I thought our kids kept playing hard, we did a better job handling the press," Mathiason said of the Cheesemakers in the third quarter.
"We made some 3s; we were able to stretch them out, and I thought our kids did a good job with continuing to play hard."
Rosemeyer scored eight points in the third quarter as the Cheesemakers outscored the Panthers 16-14.
"She's a senior who's a four-year varsity player, an all-conference type player," Mathiason said. "She does a good job on the block and getting rebounds. She does an all-around great job on the floor. She's their leader, and put some good pressure on us."
