MONROE - The Monroe High School girls tennis team swept all three doubles matches en route to a 5-2 dual match win over Portage on Tuesday.

"Our first dual home match of the season was a success," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "The girls came out ready to play and played really well."

Monroe improved to 6-3 in dual matches.

"It was a windy day and for the most part we adjusted well to the wind," Saugstad said.

At No. 1 doubles, Monroe senior Hallie Signer and sophomore Jensen Christensen defeated Portage senior Sophie Amend and junior Ellie Vorphal 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, the Cheesemakers' senior duo of Parris Bunker and Kiara Miller beat Portage's junior combo of Elise Kilde and Katelyn Julson 6-1, 6-0. Monroe juniors Jessa Lucas and Becky Thoman defeated Savannah Cooper and Lauryn Calkins 6-1, 6-1.

"We had a strong performance from all of our doubles teams," Saugstad said. "Each team did a nice job of taking over the net and ending points quickly."

Monroe sophomore Grace Tostrud at No. 2 singles beat Portage senior Caitlyn Warren 6-1, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Monroe senior Skye Allen defeated Portage senior Cece Limmex 6-0, 6-0. Monroe sophomore Emma Towne lost a hard-fought match at No. 3 singles to Portage senior Greta McKinnon 6-3, 4-6, 5-7. At No. 1 singles, Monroe senior Maggie Setterstrom lost to Portage senior Leah Hollander 6-0, 7-6.

"Grace and Skye really played well at No. 2 and 4 singles," Saugstad said. "They hit good shots and let their opponents make mistakes."

Monroe hosts a doubles quad today.
