FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe girls basketball team made free throws when it mattered most Friday night en route to a 35-27 win against Fort Atkinson.
Monroe (5-12, 3-6 Badger South) entered the fourth quarter with a 27-22 lead and made 6 of 9 free throws to close the game. The Cheesemakers finished 15 of 20 from the line.
"That was the difference in the game," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "We did a really nice job of making our free throws, especially in the fourth quarter."
Monroe senior Molly Hlubek scored nine points while sophomores Vanessa Studer and Taylor Barrett had seven each.
The Cheesemakers made four 3-pointers in the first half, two by Hlubek, to take a 16-15 halftime lead. Monroe held the Blackhawks to 12 second-half points.
"I thought we did a really nice job on defense," Mathiason said.
On deck for Monroe are games against Waunakee, the co-leader in the Badger North Conference, and Monona Grove. The Cheesemakers host Waunakee on Friday, Feb. 10 and play at Badger South Conference leader MG on Feb. 16.
"Our schedule gets a lot more difficult," Mathiason said. "Getting the win will hopefully give the girls an extra boost for next week and down the road."
