Monroe's Bruce solid at Junior PGA

MADISON - Monroe's Kyle Bruce battled many of the top golfers in the state and finished 16th among more than 200 players in the Wisconsin Junior PGA Championship that concluded Wednesday.

Bruce carded a 72 on Tuesday and a 74 on Wednesday at Yahara Hills Golf Course.

His two-day total of 146 was 12 strokes behind winner Zach Gaugert of Waunakee. Middleton's Mitch Johnson and Onalaska's Ben Skogen tied for second at 138 in the event, which includes players age 13-18.

Monroe sophomore-to-be Matt Miller had rounds of 82 and 85 for a 167.

Bruce's 146 was 2-over par for the tournament.

The recent Monroe High School graduate recorded 10 consecutive pars on Tuesday before he bogied the 11th hole. He scored par on the next six holes and birdied the final hole to take some momentem into the second round on Wednesday.

Bruce bogied the second hole and then birdied No. 5 and No. 9 to make the turn at 1 under par 35.

Consecutive birdies moved Bruce to 2-under par. But he hit tee shots into the trees on both Nos. 14 and 18 and took double bogies.

Bruce was scheduled to play in a Wisconsin State Amateur qualifying tournament today at The Oaks Golf Course in Cottage Grove.
