OREGON - Junior Becca Armstrong turned in a dominating pitching performance Thursday and the Monroe softball team's offense came alive in the late innings to beat Oregon, 13-2.

Armstrong allowed one hit and no runs in five innings. She struck out 11 and walked one.

"Any time you strike out 11 and walk only one, we will take that any day," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said of Armstrong. "She mixed in a changeup. She was able to dominate them with fastballs on the outside corner."

Monroe junior Samantha Solberg pitched two innings in relief and gave up one earned run on three hits.

Monroe (1-2, 1-0 Badger South) scored five runs in the first inning and then went three innings without scoring.

The Cheesemakers finished with 17 hits. Sophomore Kayla Updike and senior Kasey Gutzmer each went 3-for-4. Sophomore Ellie Grossen was 3-for-5. Sophomore Taylor O'Leksy and sophomore Chandra McGuire were each 2-for-4.

Monroe broke the game open with a four-run sixth. Gutzmer led off with a double and Armstrong delivered an RBI single to ignite the inning. O'Leksy followed with an RBI double and Updike had an RBI single.

"We did a nice job of hitting the ball hard," Buvid said. "We had some baserunning blunders in the middle innings."

Monroe will play at Madison Edgewood in a rescheduled game today. The Cheesemakers' game against Fort Atkinson at Twining Park has been rescheduled for May 14.
