MADISON - The Monroe boys track team proved that the 3,200-meter relay will again be a force and one of the top contenders for state after the Cheesemakers won the event at the Madison West Class B Relays on Saturday.

The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of senior Dominick Curtiss, senior Thang Lu, sophomore Jonah Tostrud and sophomore Dylan Scace won the race with a time of 8 minutes, 26.59 seconds. Lu broke 2 minutes in his leg of the 800 and made up nine seconds.

"It tells a lot about their drive to be better," Monroe boys track coach Scott Mosher said. "Those are the guys at the beginning of the year I thought would give us the best shot."

However, there are several other runners competing for spots on the 3,200 relay. Mosher likes the fact that the competition can push each runner.

"They know if they don't perform well there will be someone else ready to step in," he said.

Baraboo racked up 102 points to win the 14-team meet. Monona Grove, a Badger South rival of Monroe's took second (79). The Cheesemakers finished ninth as a team (27).

"We didn't try to score as many points as we could," Mosher said. "We wanted to see guys in different events. The long distance runners had a tough workout on Thursday. I didn't want them to do any more than two events. We got a good look at Monona Grove and they are a very good team. We know where we stand and we have a lot of catching up to do."

Scace finished second in the 800 (2:06.28).

"He (Scace) wasn't happy with his finish," Mosher said. "He was ahead the whole race and got nipped at the end. He was upset with his finish."

The Cheesemakers' 800 relay team of sophomore Jason Koller, sophomore Brayden Zettle, freshman Anthany Hernandez and sophomore Javon Gibson took sixth with a time of 1:39.7. The Cheesemakers' quartet didn't know they would run the 800 relay until another team dropped out.

"I didn't want to put a team in there that was not ready to race," Mosher said. "We told them if they break 1:40 that would be amazing and they did it."

Monroe senior Mitch Keith finished sixth in the pole vault (11-6) and sophomore Drake Ingold took seventh in the 1,600 (4:47.63). Monroe's Tyler Sobacki missed the meet due to hip pain.
