MADISON - The Monroe girls swimming team turned in some amazing performances in a dual meet at Madison Edgewood, Tuesday.

The Cheesemakers won seven of the 11 events, but dropped the dual meet to the Crusaders, 93-77.

Monroe freshman Rachel Root won two individual events and was a part of two winning relays. Root won the 50-yard freestyle (26.61 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (1:05.18).

The Cheesemakers' 400 freestyle relay team of Root, Kendell Niffenegger, Randi Robertson, and Leanna Schwartzlow finished first with a time of 3 minutes, 58.41 seconds.

Monroe coach Linda Moser said the meet was full of excitement, which included the 400 freestyle relay team, which broke four minutes.

"We haven't been able to do that in almost five years," Moser said. "It was so exciting for all to watch.

"Many of the swimmers cut times as we continue down that long journey to conference. Once again the girls did not give in to a tough opponent with a lot more depth than we have."

Root also teamed up with Schwartzlow, Niffenegger and Robertson to win the 200 medley relay. The Cheesemakers took the top two spots in the 200 medley relay with Sara Heitkamp, Cat Weeden, Jolene DeNure and Sarah Kind taking second with a time of 2:11.64.

The Cheesemakers also swept the top two spots in the 100 butterfly as Niffenegger took second (1:10.99).

Schwartzlow won the 100 freestyle (:59.36) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.34).

Robertson added a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:05.96) and she was third in the 200 freestyle (2:17.04). Heitkamp finished third in the backstroke (1:13.25) and Weeden was third in the 500 freestyle (6:07.80).

Edgewood beat Monroe, 97-38 in the junior varsity meet.
