Monroe wins at Edgerton

EDGERTON - The Monroe boys soccer team bounced back from a tough loss to Stoughton and beat Edgerton 3-1 in a nonconference game Thursday.

"We knew Edgerton has been playing well," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "They are in our playoff bracket. This is a big one to show how we can play against teams in our division. They are a very fast and physical team. They made us play 90 minutes."

Monroe sophomore Alex Barradas scored the first goal at 4 minutes, 4 seconds. Sophomore teammate Aaron Ziolkowski came through with a goal off an assist by junior Daniel Lapp to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead at 38:04. Monroe (6-8-2, 1-4 Badger South) led 2-1 at the half.

Junior Nick Schumacher scored a goal on an assist from junior Victor Vasquez in the second half to seal the win for the Cheesemakers.

Monroe junior goalie Deven Schulte had seven saves. The Cheesemakers play at Whitewater today.

BELLEVILLE - In a showdown for the Capitol Conference title, Wisconsin Heights-Barneveld scored a goal in the first half and won after the game was called due to lightning at the half.

It marks the first conference loss for Sugar River (12-4-3, 7-1 Capitol Conference). Wisconsin Heights-Barneveld remains unbeaten in conference (7-0-1).

The Raiders next take on HD United on Tuesday, and will complete the regular season at Mount Horeb on Oct. 12. Mount Horeb (9-4-1) is ranked third in the state in the WisSports.net Coaches Poll in Divison 3.
