MONROE - The end of the school year brings the beginning of the spring sports postseason with area baseball teams eyeing a trip to Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton for a shot at a state championship beginning June 15. Here is a look at first-round regional matchups for area teams:
In Division 2, the Monroe Cheesemakers received the No. 3 seed and will face a familiar opponent in the regional quarterfinal on May 27. Monroe will face the Brodhead-Juda Cardinals, the No. 6 seed, who they beat, 15-4 on May 14. The Cheesemakers will also have an incentive to reach the sectionals as Monroe will host the semifinals and finals on June 7.
The Division 3 field looks like the boys basketball playoffs as fifth-seeded Darlington travels to fourth-seeded Cuba City in the opening round May 27. No. 6 seed New Glarus travels to Belleville to meet the No. 3 seed Wildcats. The sectionals take place June 7 at La Crosse Aquinas.
The Monticello Ponies have the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the Division 4 tournament. They will face the winner of Faith Christian (No. 6 seed) at Albany (No. 3 seed). The Black Hawk Warriors drew the No. 4 seed and will host fifth-seeded Williams Bay. The sectionals will take place at Johnson Creek on June 7.
Also in Division 4, Pecatonica (No. 3) will host Argyle (No. 6). The No. 1 seed in the bracket is Barneveld, which reached the state tournament just two seasons ago. The sectionals will be played at Brookwood June 7.
