Monroe Track: Cheesemakers pillage the land of the pirates

WATERLOO - Fans who witnessed the finish of the 2-mile run at Thursday's Waterloo Invitational saw all they needed to know about how Monroe's boys fared.

Led by Jon Swartz's personal record of 10 minutes, 34.1 seconds, the Cheesemakers placed first through third in the 3,200-meter run. Altogether, Monroe won six of the 18 events and ran away with the eight-team meet title.

"Going 1-2-3 at such a big meet is awfully tough to do," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. His team's 174 points were nearly 40 more than the nearest club.

Joe Pecora took second and freshman Dylan Starck was third in his first competitive attempt at the two-mile.

Monroe junior Brett DeNure scalded the track in winning the 400 at 51.6, and lightened up a bit on the tempo in winning the 800 at 2:06.

He wasn't in his usual spot in the 4x800 relay, but Justin Scott stepped in, joining Kyle Klein, Matt Priebe and Cullen Sampson as the team won with a time of 8:37.2.

Tad Christen won the triple jump with a combined distance of 41 feet, 7 inches. Luke Voegeli won the shot put (46-10) and Lucas Lue won the discus (140-1), as the field portion continued to carry its weight, to say the least.

"Our field events are really starting to pull in big-time points for us," Hirsbrunner said.

Fifteen personal records were posted by Monroe, perhaps most notably a third-place-worthy performance in the pole vault by freshman Jeff Hill, who overshot his former best by more than a foot at 11 feet, 6 inches.

Monroe's relays all ran their best times of the season.

"Tonight we came out firing hard," Hirsbrunner said.

Monday, the junior-varsity Cheesemakers will test their mettle at the varsity Darlington Invitational.
