STOUGHTON - One of Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill's goals for this season was for her team to generate more scoring. The Cheesemakers didn't score much against Stoughton Thursday, but with good defense, outstanding goal-keeping, and a fierce wind, the Cheesemakers scored just enough to defeat the Vikings.
Freshman Vanessa Studer's goal on a direct free kick at 49:54 accounted for all the scoring in the Cheesemakers' 1-0 win over Stoughton.
Monroe had to go against the wind in the first half and couldn't mount a scoring threat, but succeeded in keeping Stoughton off the scoreboard.
"It was very intense in the first half and the wind was a factor," O'Neill said.
With the wind at their back in the second half, Monroe took advantage.
"It was much easier to move the ball in the second half," O'Neill said.
Early in the second half, the Vikings were charged with a tripping foul, allowing Studer to score on a direct free kick. Senior goalkeeper Katie Coplien made the score stand up with 10 saves.
"Katie had a tremendous game. She made some key saves for us tonight," O'Neill said.
Monroe (2-1-2, 1-1 Badger South) will host Lodi Monday at 5 p.m.
