MONROE - The Monroe tennis team got three straight-set wins at singles and a win at No. 2 doubles to defeat Stoughton 4-3 in a Badger South Conference dual Wednesday, May 1.

At No. 1 singles, Taylor Soddy defeated Stoughton's Tanner Kahl 6-3, 6-3; at No. 3 singles, Matt Monahan defeated Stoughton's Matthew Gharrity 6-2, 6-3; and at No. 4 singles, Jeremy Miller defeated Stoughton's Asher McMullin 6-3, 6-3.

The Cheesemakers also got a win from their No. 2 doubles team of Josh Riese and Jared Nix, who defeated Stoughton's Manny Calzada and Austin Scheel 6-2, 6-0.

Monroe tennis coach Brad Saugstad was pleased to see Riese and Nix continue to roll.

"Josh Riese and Jared Nix at 2 doubles picked up where they left off last night against Oregon," Saugstad said. "These two are on a roll right now. They're putting in first serves and returns and taking the match over at the net. They are playing some solid doubles."

Much of Monroe's win came at singles, though, and Saugstad had plenty to say about the way his guys went out and handled their opponents in straight sets.

"Taylor Soddy played a solid match after his emotional win last night," Saugstad said. "You're always kind of worried that their might be a letdown after a big win, but Taylor worked his opponent's backhand and did what he needed to do tonight.

"Matt Monahan and Jeremy Miller rebounded from tough losses last night and got some important wins. Matt was having success at the net and Jeremy was patient and picked the right times to attack."

Saugstad said he was glad to get the first conference win of the year so early in the Badger South schedule.

"It was a close win tonight, and a much-needed win for the team," he said. "We started off the Badger South season by playing arguably the two top teams in conference, so it was nice to get our first conference win of the year."

At No. 2 singles, Kevin Noriega lost to Stoughton's Elijah Thunell 6-0, 6-0. At No. 1 doubles, Stoughton's John Evans and Bubba Shaffer defeated Kevin Kohlstedt and Jess Hager 6-4, 6-2. At No. 3 doubles, Stoughton's Ike Landers and Gabe Rowley defeated Vince Wartenweiler and Austin Lewey 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4.

"Vince Wartenweiler and Austin Lewey lost a close one tonight," Saugstad said. "Vince and Austin had won the first set and were up in the second when Stoughton elevated their game. Stoughton took over at the net and forced Austin and Vince out of their comfort zone. We fought back and kept it close, but Stoughton won more big points."

The Cheesemakers will take on a conference opponent for the third day in a row, when they travel to take on Milton Thursday, May 2. Saugstad is hoping to build on the success against Stoughton.

Said Saugstad, "Hopefully we can keep the momentum rolling."
