MADISON - Both the Monroe boys and girls cross country teams ran to seventh-place finishes Thursday in the Madison West Invitational at Lake Farm Park.

Madison West captured the girls title 34-73 over Cambridge-Deerfield. Monroe finished with a score of 159 in the eight-team meet.

Monroe sophomore Rachel Meier finished eighth overall in the 5,000-meter race in a time of 20 minutes, 43 seconds.

"(Meier) went out easy and tested the waters because the last time she raced she ended up in the hospital," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "Some of our girls are banged up so we really used this race as a workout."

Monroe sophomore Emma Peterson placed 26th, running a personal best 21:58, and junior Jordan Hirsbrunner was 34th (22:28).

"(Peterson) ran a super race," Hirsbrunner said. "She stepped up and filled a spot we needed. I'm proud of her."

Monroe junior Allyce Fahrney finished 44th (23:32) and sophomore Kati Symons was 47th (23:59).

In the boys race, Hirsbrunner had No. 1 runner Nick Baumann run with sophomore Jonah Tostrud as a training strategy.

"(Baumann) potentially could have been the individual champion," Hirsbrunner said. "We wanted him to run with Jonah. Nick is so good at his pace and this is just Jonah's second race. We are not too concerned with the finish as a team."

Madison Memorial outdistanced Madison West for the boys team title 30-55. Monroe finished with a score of 187 in the 11-team meet.

The top runner for the Cheesemakers was Thang Lu who finished 26th (17:57). Monroe sophomore Drake Ingold took 34th (18:09) and Baumann was 38th (18:18). Junior teammate Ryan Peterson took 44th (18:32), and sophomore Dylan Scace was 45th (18:32), which was just ahead of junior teammate Parker Ingold (18:36), who took 46th.

"We have some guys banged up," Hirsbrunner said. "We didn't race hard. We used it as a workout."
