PLATTEVILLE - It was just a regular season cross country meet, but Saturday's Platteville Invitational may be a preview of the race for a state berth.

Dodgeville-Mineral Point edged Monroe 38-67, which amounted to a little more than one minute for the Platteville Invite title.

It's the same course where the Cheesemakers will run the sectional Oct. 23.

"It was a preview," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "Other than McFarland, we had all the big teams that are contenders competing for state out of the sectional."

Dodgeville-Mineral Point sophomore Trevor Wunnicke won the 5,000-meter race by eight seconds over Darlington freshman Tyson Miehe who finished with a time of 16 minutes, 22 seconds. New Glarus-Monticello sophomore Ryan McCoy finished third (16:34), Monroe senior Dylan Starck took fourth and Albany senior Drew Mather was sixth (16:49) overall out of 136 runners. Darlington placed all five of its top runners in the top 10 to win the small school division 34-63 over Albany.

"I think that is amazing what he has been doing," Hirsbrunner said of Miehe. "He has been someone to keep an eye on the last three years."

The Cheesemakers had four runners place in the top 12 of the large school division. Starck finished third in the large school results. Monroe junior Joel Henry took sixth (17:03), sophomore Steve Christiansen finished seventh (17:06) and freshman Ethan Moehn took 12th (17:26). The Cheesemakers' success came without junior Luke Peterson, who was held out of the meet due to a strained hamstring.

"To beat those other contenders without him running feels really good," Hirsbrunner said. "We ran super. It's a little bit ahead of schedule."

Moehn had the second best time of all freshmen runners.

"He's been doing a tremendous job for us," Hirsbrunner said. "He is learning how to race. You never master it. You can learn something from every race."

New Glarus-Monticello with 98 points finished fourth in the large school division. McCoy finished second in the large school division. Sophomore Alexander Yeiser took 18th (17:50) and senior Reid Zanoya was 23rd (17:58). Junior Evan Schultz finished 27th with a time of 18:01 and freshman Young Chul Vetterli was 28th (18:02) to round out the top five for the Knights.

In the small school division, Miehe took first. Darlington junior Destin Komprood was sixth (17:15), sophomore Quinn Cullen took eighth (17:26). Senior Connor Roche finished ninth (17:29) and junior Michael Sinclair was 10th (17:42).

Albany had five of the top 26 runners led by Mather who was second in the small school race. Albany junior Reece Whitehead finished fourth (16:57) and sophomore Jose Ramirez was 11th (17:44). Senior Trent Kuebli took 20th (18:24) and sophomore Johnny Kallgren was 26th (18:36).

Pecatonica-Argyle finished fourth out of nine teams. The Vikings had three of the top 15 runners led by junior Cameron Colson who was seventh with a time of 17:16. Pecatonica-Argyle junior Wyatt Massey finished 13th (17:48) and senior Chris James was 15th (17:58).
