MADISON - Monroe finished the Badger Conference tennis tournament at UW's Nielsen Tennis Stadium tied for fifth with Fort Atkinson.
"The highlight of the second day (Saturday) of the tournament was Quinten L'Yvonnet," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said of his No. 2 singles player.
L'Yvonnet had to play Patrick Carney from Edgewood in the semifinal, the same player he lost to 6-1, 6-1 five days earlier.
"It turned into a 2 1/2 hour back and forth match," Saugstad said of Saturday's semifinal. "Quinten came out playing a very defensive style and letting Carney make mistakes. As Carney got more defensive to limit his own mistakes, Quinten looked for opportunities to be aggressive."
L'Yvonnet won the first set 6-3, but lost the final two sets 6-4, 6-2. In the third place match, the French-exchange student avenged an earlier loss to Oregon's Justin Helmkamp, winning 6-4, 6-3.
The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles tandem of Carson Root and Garrett Tschanz lost just its second match of the year with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 loss to Monona Grove in the semifinals.
"Monona Grove took over the net early in the match. We let them charge the net and didn't put much pressure on their shots. In the second set, Carson and Garrett turned things around and won the race to the net and started dictating the points," Saugstad said. "Unfortunately, in the third set, after jumping out to a 3-1 lead, we couldn't hold serve."
The duo knocked off Sauk Prairie's top pair with a 6-2, 6-1 win in the third place match.
Taylor Soddy, Monroe's No. 1 singles player, had a rough day, according to Saugstad. Soddy lost to Fort Atkinson's Andrew Dahl in the semifinals 6-2, 7-6 (3), and then was topped in the third place match by Waunakee's Calvin Clack, 6-4, 6-1.
"Dahl is a good player who Taylor won a tough match against earlier this year. This time, though, Dahl came out and took charge in the points," Saugstad said. "Taylor just ran out of gas and lost (to Clack)."
Madison Edgewood nearly ruled the entire tournament, winning every title but the No. 4 singles bracket. Edgewood finished with 54 team points to dominate the South standings. Oregon (24) was second in the south and fourth overall. Monroe and Fort Atkinson (20) finished tied for third in the South and fifth overall. Waunakee (31) won the North and Sauk Prairie (25) was second in the North and third overall.
