Monroe takes 4th at Verona Invite

VERONA - Running without its top two runners for the second straight meet, the Monroe boys cross country team ran to a fourth-place finish at the Verona Invitational in Division 2.

Monroe junior Drake Ingold finished fifth with a time of 17 minutes, 5 seconds.

Junior Kyle Legler took 11th (17:34) followed by senior Ryan Peterson who placed 20th (18:25).

Junior Jonah Tostrud finished 25th (18:35) and senior Josh Smith was 32nd (19:07).

The Cheesemakers held out their top two runners, senior Nick Baumann and junior Dylan Scace, as well as senior Parker Ingold.

"We had lots of season best and lifetime best times, despite Verona being a very hilly and windy course," Monroe co-coach Scott Mosher said. "The kids who ran all competed hard and are ahead of where we thought they would be."

In the girls race, Monroe finished sixth out of seven teams with 109 points. Badger South Conference rival Stoughton won the invite title 53-70 over McFarland.

The Cheesemakers were led by junior Rachel Meier who took seventh (20:53) and senior Jordan Hirsbrunner who finished 10th (21:45). Teammate Natalie Faith placed 27th (23:26) and Allyce Fahrney was 32nd (23:38).

Senior teammate Josie Eberle took 33rd (23:50).

In the Division 3 field, the New Glarus-Monticello boys took fifth (150) out of nine teams. New Glarus-Monticello senior Kyle Fredrickson took third (17:07) and senior Christian Arnett placed 20th (18:35).

Freshman teammate Adam Nelson finished 26th (19:11) and senior Andrew Newberry was 48th (20:29. Senior Cade Beutler rounded out the top five for the Glarner Knights taking 53rd (21:17).

The New Glarus-Monticello girls finished eighth (211) out of 10 teams in the Division 3 field. The Wisconsin Dells captured the team title 48-75 over Platteville.

New Glarus-Monticello sophomore Gabbie Sawyer finished 13th (21:45) was the only runner for the Knights to finish in the top 40. Junior teammate Gabby Whisler took 44th (24:00) and freshman teammate Molly Molencamp was 49th (24:50). Senior Kelly Fredrickson placed 51st (25:47) and junior Walela Three-Sticks finished 54th (26:43).
