MOUNT HOREB - The Monroe baseball team bounced back from a nail-biting loss to Monona Grove by sweeping a doubleheader against Mount Horeb Saturday.
Monroe defeated Mount Horeb 4-2 and 5-3.
The Cheesemakers (9-8, 3-6 Badger South) used three pitchers in the second game. Monroe senior Logan Weckerly pitched three innings and gave up one earned run on six hits. He struck out one and walked one. Sophomore Hogan Edwards pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief and gave up just one run. He struck out two and walked four. Senior Chase Hellenbrand pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings in relief and struck out two.
The Cheesemakers broke the game open with a three-run fourth.
Monroe senior Sean Saxby and junior Brent Edmunds each went 2-for-4 to lead the Cheesemakers to a 5-3 win in the second game. The Cheesemakers had two-run first and third innings en route to the victory.
Monroe junior Taylor Meir pitched six innings to get the win in the first game. He gave up three earned runs on six hits. Meir struck out three and walked two. Weckerly pitched a shutout seventh to get the save.
