MONROE - Tennis coach Brad Saugstad was hoping the Cheesemaker girls tennis team could pull out a third place finish at the Monroe Doubles tournament on Saturday.
Monroe lived up to their coaches' expectations finishing tied for third with Lodi at the six-team tournament. Baraboo won the tournament (24 points) just ahead of Delavan Darien (18). Since two teams didn't make it to the tournament, Monroe used a three-team round robin format with teams crossing over and playing against the other three-team round robin for the championship, third and fifth place.
"It was right about where I thought we would finish," Saugstad said. "As a team we went 8-7, but a very positive stat was that after five of the losses the girls came back to win the next match. Being able to rebound from a loss is a very difficult thing to do and takes a lot of mental toughness. It was great to see the girls all bounce back like that."
Monroe's Paige Prien and Amber Jenson at No. 3 doubles finished second. Prien and Jenson went 2-1 in the tournament. In the championship match, they lost to Baraboo's Lane Kortbein and Cahrome Teasdale 6-7 (5), 6-1, 10-7. Prien and Jenson opened the tournament by defeating Delavan Darien's Jenny Hoyord and Emily Zaukas 7-5, 7-5. The Cheesemakers' No. 3 doubles duo then defeated Elkhorn's Katrina Weber and Mariah Prom 6-1, 6-3.
"Paige and Amber really struggled against McFarland last Thursday because of their lobs," Saugstad said. "Today though, Paige and Amber looked like a different team and figured out how to handle the lob. They had a great day."
The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of juniors Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire as well as the No. 4 doubles team of Sarah Sabatke and Sarah Wong each took third place at their flights. Grossen and McGuire lost to Delavan Darien's Kylie Bliss and Sam Hoyord in the first round 7-6 (2), 6-2. They rebounded to beat Elkhorn's Alanna Welsh and Margaret Koss 6-0, 6-3, and they defeated Baraboo's Sabrina Fuller and Courtney Johnson 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 in the third place match.
Sabatke and Wong at No. 4 doubles also finished the tournament 2-1. In the first round, Sabatke and Wong lost to Elkhorn's Samantha Price and Erika Sesing 6-0, 6-1. The Cheesemakers' duo rebounded to beat Delavan Darien's Bri Kangas and Ellen Schutt 6-0, 6-4 and went on to defeat Stoughton's Marissa Despins and Molly Statz 6-1, 2-6, 10-3.
Monroe's No. 1A doubles team of Macayla Quinn and Alisa Fager took fourth. Quinn and Fager lost to Lodi's Olivia Gallagher and Camryn Kellogg in a third place match 6-0, 6-1. The one match Quinn and Fager did win was against Delavan Darien's Lauren Kuntz and Rose Wang, who they knocked off 6-2, 4-6, 10-7. At No. 2 doubles, Allie Coplien and Chelsea Miller lost a third place match to Lodi's Christina Plunkett and Lindsay Deans 7-5, 6-0. The one win for Coplien and Miller came against Elkhorn's Lindsey Klemp and Taylor Reed who they defeated 6-4, 2-6, 10-2.
