McFARLAND - Veronica Andraski won the 50 freestyle (30.98 seconds) for the Monroe girls swimming team's only win Tuesday in a tough 124-46 loss to McFarland, a former conference foe.
"It is that tough time of the season," Cheesemakers head coach Linda Moser said. "Everyone is tired, achy, fighting the cold and flu - yet knowing conference is just around the corner and worrying that they will not be 100 percent healthy and ready for it. I think all of those things attribute to the fact that we looked sluggish in the water."
Monroe's 200 medley relay clocked themselves at 2:19.27. Though it wasn't a personal best, Moser said all four swimmers - Randi Robertson, Leanna Schwartzlow, Kendell Niffenegger and Andraski, all swam well.
"Veronica didn't pull a personal best, but very close," Moser said.
Andraski also logged a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle (1:07.64).
Robertson took a second off her time in the 500 freestyle (5:24.82, second place) and finished in third in the 100 backstroke (1:18.94). Niffenegger finished third in the 200 freestyle (2:34.66)
Schwartzlow took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.48) and second in the 200 individual medley (2:43.48).
Perhaps the surprise of the day was Nichole Lattin.
"Nichole swam a personal best in both of her individual events. She swam a 2:24.41 in the 200 freestyle - a two-second improvement - and a 5:40.62 in the 500 freestyle - a three-second improvement," Moser said.
Kylee Ritschard dropped a full second in her 100 freestyle (1:11.57) and Sarah Heitkamp added a personal best in the 200 IM (2:43.48).
"I know we will be ready for (conference), and the personal records tonight convinced me we are on the right course. We will only keep improving with hard work in this last stretch of the season," Moser said.
