MONROE - The Monroe girls tennis team lost a Badger South Conference match to Stoughton 6-0 Thursday.

Stoughton swept three singles matches and had a lead at No. 4 singles before the match was rained out. Stoughton junior Sarah Benoy at No. 1 singles defeated Monroe senior Eva Priewe 6-1, 6-0. Stoughton junior Anna Nelson at No. 2 singles beat Monroe senior Katie Demiainiuk 6-2, 6-1. Stoughton sophomore Gigi Barberino at No. 4 singles topped Monroe sophomore Skye Allen 6-2, 6-2.

"Stoughton has a very athletic team that was too much for us tonight," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "The scores don't necessarily reflect it, but we are really improving as a team. Our footwork has gotten significantly better as well as our shots."

The Vikings also swept three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Stoughton juniors Payton Kahl and Kendra Halverson upended Monroe sophomores Maggie Setterstrom and Hallie Signer 6-1, 6-1. The Vikings' Holly Brickson and Syndey Johnson defeated Monroe seniors Hannah Zweifel and Shannon Rabotoski at No. 2 doubles

6-1, 6-0. At No. 3 doubles, the Vikings' Carrie Aide and Marissa Robson beat the Cheesemakers' Maija Liimatainen and Morgan Quinn 6-1, 6-0.

Monroe will play at Waunakee today.

"They may be better than both Edgewood and Stoughton," Saugstad said. "The girls just need to hang in there for one more match, and then we'll end the year with three conference matches where the improvements we have been making will be much more evident."
