MONROE - With Monroe trailing by one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Monroe senior Desmond Ford delivered a walk-off RBI single to give the Cheesemakers a comeback 5-4 win over the Red Hawks Thursday.

With the win, Monroe (5-7, 2-5 Badger South) snapped a four-game losing streak. The Cheesemakers left 15 runners on base, but came through when it mattered most.

"We finally had some clutch hitting in the seventh inning," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "It's a big win. They showed some perseverance."

Milton entered the game tied for first in the conference with Oregon, Stoughton and Madison Edgewood at 4-1.

To break the streak, the Cheesemakers got big performances from senior Logan Weckerly, junior Garrett Gogin and Ford. Weckerly pitched a complete game and gave up two earned runs on eight hits. He struck out five and walked just one. Gogin went 2-for-2 with a double and one RBI.

"Any time we have Logan on the mound we have a pretty good chance to win," Huffman said. "He didn't have his best stuff tonight. Early on, he struggled getting the release point on his curveball. Then as the game went on, he got better. His fastball was great. Logan is really tough when he can throw his curveball for strikes. It (the curveball) came around at the right time."

Both the Red Hawks and Cheesemakers were tied at 3 going into the seventh. Milton pushed across one run in the top of the seventh. The Cheesemakers rallied to win the game with a two-run seventh.

Monroe senior Carter Adkins led off with a single. Senior teammate Chase Hellenbrand moved Adkins into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Gogin then came through with an RBI double to right field. Senior Sean Saxby walked. Senior Jacob Flannery as a courtesy runner and Saxby both moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Sophomore teammate Hogan Edwards singled to left to load the bases. Ford then had the game-winning RBI single to center to score Flannery.

Ford finished with two RBI and Adkins had two runs scored.

"It's a big confidence booster in the conference," Huffman said.

Monroe will play at Brodhead-Juda at 4:45 p.m. today.

"They probably got better," Huffman said. "They are a team in our regional. Hopefully, we can get another 'W and take that into the seeding meeting."
