EVANSVILLE - The Monroe baseball time struggled at the plate and in the field Monday night in a five-inning loss to Evansville, 11-0.
The Cheesemakers notched just two hits in the game - doubles by Hayden Zahradka and Payton Stauffacher. Defensively, Monroe committed five errors, which Evansville wasted no time taking advantage of the miscues.
The Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead after the first and then put up a seven-spot in the second inning.
"We gave them six outs that inning," Monroe head coach Eric Losenegger said. "Their first guy hit a line drive to our outfielder who misread it and came up too far, which turned it into a triple. We had four errors after that, some on ground balls, and others on throwing errors.
Jared Baumgartner started on the hill for the Cheesemakers, allowing six hits, nine runs (three earned) and a walk with two strikeouts over two innings. Nick Benkert pitched the final two innings for Monroe, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two.
Evansville's Ethan France was credited with the win, pitching the first three innings and allowing the two hits and a walk while striking out five. Sam Urquhart pitched the fourth and Jo Haakenson struck out the side in the fifth.
Zach Mielke was 2-for-3 at the plate for Evansville, and Urquhart had two walks and a home run.
Monroe wastes no time getting back on the diamond, as the Cheesemakers host Stoughton today.
