Monroe stays in 1st in fastpitch

MONROE - Monroe Optimists No. 1 split a pair of games in Monroe Area Fastpitch league action on Sunday.

Chandra McGuire smacked a 2-run home run and Kayla Updike collected a 2-run double to stake Monroe to a 4-0 lead after three innings against Monticello (3-4).

Over the final four innings, however, Monroe collected just two hits and Monticello scored five runs in the last two innings to win 5-4.

In the second game, Monroe (5-1) pounded out 13 hits in an 11-0 win over previously undefeated Orfordville (5-1).

Taylor O'Leksy, Samantha Solberg, Katie Holmes, McGuire and Updike each had multiple hits for Monroe. Becca Armstrong and Solberg combined for the shutout on the mound. Armstrong struck out nine in five innings of work.

In other Red League games, Orangeville (3-4) defeated Juda (4-3) 6-5, Juda beat Brodhead (1-7) 5-4 and Argyle (3-4) knocked off Brodhead 15-10.

In White League play, Monroe's Optimists No. 2 (4-3) pounded out 18 hits on its way to an 18-2 win over Orfordville No. 2 (0-7). Holmes, Kirstin Vetterli, Samantha Hose and Michaela Geiken each had multiple hits to pace Monroe's offense. Corey Wells and Hose didn't allow an earned run while striking out six on the mound for Monroe.

Other White League games saw Juda (7-0) defeat Evansville (3-3) 13-7 and Durand (3-3) knocking off Pecatonica (3-4) 10-6.
