MADISON - The Monroe softball team played everyone on the team and cruised to a 9-1 win over Madison Edgewood.

Monroe sophomore Natalie Dillon pitched three shutout innings to get the win. She gave up just two hits, struck out three and walked just one.

"We have a big game tomorrow (today against Monona Grove)," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "We wanted to take some innings off so we could keep her (Dillon) at her sharpest and best and we were coming off of prom."

Monroe senior Samantha Hose pitched four innings and gave up one run on four hits. She struck out one and walked two.

"She (Hose) has worked at it," Buvid said. "Samantha, when she has been called on, has been very good. Her change-up is very effective and it kept them off-balance."

Monroe (14-1, 6-0 Badger South) had 10 hits as a team. The Cheesemakers broke the game open with a five-run second inning. Monroe senior Kayla Updike went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI. Updike hit a two-run home run in the fourth. Senior Kirsten Vetterli went 2-for-3 and senior Taylor O'Leksy had two RBI.

Monroe will play at Monona Grove today. The Silver Eagles handed Milton its first conference loss 6-5 last week.

"We handled them the first time," Buvid said. "They still have the best returning pitcher in the conference. Every game is different. We will have to be on our A-game to beat them."
