MOUNT HOREB - Monroe senior Mitch Riese delivered a clutch game-winning hit to help the Cheesemakers knock off Mount Horeb 4-3 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday, April 20.
Monroe (1-3, 0-2 badger South) split the twinbill with the Vikings losing the first game 8-0. Riese crushed a two-out, two-run double to center in the seventh inning to give the Cheesemakers their first win in the second game of the doubleheader.
"We have been talking to kids about those moments when the game is close we need someone to step up and make a big play," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "Any time you can walk off like that it's exciting.
"Hopefully, now they know they can compete with anybody. That was a huge win. Mount Horeb is a good team. Hopefully, we can get things going in the right direction."
Monroe senior Alex Einbeck pitched a complete game and gave up just one earned run on six hits. He struck out six and walked two. In the seventh, senior Ryan Erickson walked to start the rally for the Cheesemakers. Junior Isaiah Siemers reached on an infield single. Einbeck reached on a fielder's choice and that set the stages for Riese.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Monroe sophomore Logan Weckerly pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs (three earned) on seven hits. He walked seven. Senior Dusty Burkhalter pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief and gave up one run on one hit. He struck out one and walked two.
Einbeck went 2-for-3 to lead the Cheesemakers.
Monroe has a stretch of four games this week. Monroe will host Badger South Conference rival Stoughton Tuesday, April 23.
