MADISON - The Monroe softball team continued to roll through the Badger South, knocking off Edgewood, 14-1.
Becca Armstrong pitched the first four innings for Monroe and gave up one unearned run on two hits. She was relieved by Sam Solberg, who pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs on two hits.
"They both did a fine job," Monroe coach Dale Buvid. "Sam's been pitching well. She showed no sign of rust. She made a few plays defensively. She did a good job in relief of Becca."
Offensively, the Cheesmakers scored their 14 runs on 14 hits. Ellie Grossen and Kayla Updike each went 3-for-5 at the plate for Monroe. Katie Holmes also had multiple hits with a 2-for-3 day.
"It was nice to get 14 hits again," Buvid said. "We got them up and down the lineup. We had 14 different players get at-bats."
Monroe improved to 16-2 overall and 8-0 in the Badger South. Buvid said his team still has a tough road ahead of them with their conference schedule and they have to keep working.
"We gotta win three of (the next) four to win conference. The team ranked right behind us is in our regional. There are several ranked teams in our sectional. We'll have our work cut out for us."
Monroe plays a doubleheader at Milton on Friday. Buvid said a sweep would be huge in the conference race.
"They beat us twice a year ago. We need to run the tables," Buvid said. "If we can sweep, we are in a very good position to win conference. If we get split and Fort beats us on Monday, Fort can still sneak in and get us. So we need to take care of business on Friday."
