STOUGHTON - The Monroe softball team made history by knocking off Stoughton 6-0 Tuesday, May 14, to finish with a perfect record of 12-0 in the Badger South Conference.

"We have never had a 12-0 conference season," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "It's a first. It will go down in the record books. We got to this point. It's something we wanted to do."

Monroe (22-2 overall) led just 1-0 through five innings. The Cheesemakers broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Monroe junior Chandra McGuire doubled leading off the sixth. Monroe junior Kayla Updike, who went 2-for-3, delivered an RBI single and junior Taylor O'Leksy singled. Senior Heather Barta moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Junior Kirsten Vetterli followed with a two-run double and senior Elicia Frie had a clutch two-run single to left to give the Cheesemakers an insurmountable 6-0 lead.

"It took us a while to get going," Buvid said. "We had five big hits in that inning."

Vetterli went 2-for-3. Monroe senior Becca Armstrong pitched six innings and gave up just two hits. She struck out nine and walked two. Senior Samantha Solberg pitched one shutout inning and struck out two.
