CAMBRIDGE - Freshman Aaron Ziolkowski scored the go-ahead goal in the second half and the Monroe High School boys soccer team rallied to knock off Cambridge-Deerfield 4-3 on Saturday.
"It really was a big win for us," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "We know our last two games (against Cambridge-Deerfield and Edgerton) are against teams in our regional. It was important for us to get a win for seeding for the tournament."
Monroe (5-10-1) trailed 2-0 early in the first half before storming back. Freshman Julio Vasquez scored a goal at 34 minutes, 17 seconds to cut Cambridge's lead to 2-1.
Monroe sophomore teammate Nick Benkert scored a goal on an assist from sophomore Nick Schumacher at 61:46 to tie the game at 2. About 10 minutes later, Ziolkowski scored the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute to give the Cheesemakers a 3-2 lead. Freshman Alex Barradas scored a goal on a pass from sophomore Evan Thompson to extend the Cheesemakers' lead to 4-2 in the 74th minute.
The Cheesemakers were down three starters, and Vasquez brought up five players from Monroe's junior varsity team. Two starters were battling illness, and one was working.
"Three of the four goals were scored by freshmen, and that was really nice to see," Vasquez said.
Monroe senior Atticus Pond had eight saves.
