LAKE GENEVA - Senior Alicia Kuester had a big performance and the Monroe High School volleyball team edged Lake Geneva Badger in five sets in a nonconference match Tuesday.
Kuester had a team-high 16 kills, four aces and three blocks to lead Monroe to a 25-13, 25-27, 23-25, 25-16, 15-4 win.
"Their confidence level is overflowing right now," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said of the Cheesemakers. "They can feel and taste what it's like to succeed and win. They did a great job and I'm really proud of them."
Monroe improves to 3-4 overall. After falling behind in the second set, the Cheesemakers stormed back before dropping eventually dropping the game.
"I made some lineup changes, and it was just miscommunication errors," Witt said. "With a different lineup, communication can break down. They pulled together and came back. Even though they were in different spots they showed that they could come back. In that fourth set they realized they had to win or they were done."
Monroe senior Whitney Wells had three aces in the final set and when she left the game, the Cheesemakers led 6-1.
"Her serve is a pretty lethal serve," Witt said. "They (Lake Geneva Badger) had a hard time setting it up for their hitters."
Monroe junior Sydney Mathiason had 11 kills, four blocks and three aces. Wells added nine kills.
Monroe junior Alysha Witt had a team-best 35 assists, and senior Hannah Neuenschwander added 18 assists. Senior Lexi Hilliard had a team-high 35 digs.
Both the Monroe junior varsity and freshman teams swept three sets from Lake Geneva Badger.
