BARABOO - The Monroe girls swimming team saved their best for last.
The Cheesemakers set 16 personal records in the WIAA Division 2 Baraboo sectional Saturday, Nov. 9.
"We won't be moving on to state, but that was the icing on the cake," Monroe coach Linda Moser said. "I am so proud of all the girls and how much time and training they put in to get to today. They are all winners in my eyes and no scoreboard will ever change that."
DeForest won the sectional championship with 354 points well ahead of runner-up McFarland (291) and third-place Madison Edgewood (272). Monroe finished last at the 13-team sectional.
The two highest finishes for the Cheesemakers included the 200 freestyle relay team that took 12th. The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of Grace Moehn, Amanda Putz, Anna Meritt, and Abby Oudinot swam a PR time of 1 minute, 52.66 seconds. The other 12th-place finish was the Cheesemakers' 400 free relay team of Moehn, Oudinot, Meritt, and Skylar Lassen with a PR of 4:12.81.
Oudinot set a PR in her one individual event, the 50 freestyle (27.31), and set PRs in the relays with a 50 split in the 200 freestyle relay of 26.42 and the 400 freestyle relay with a 100 split of 1:00.23.
Moehn set PRs in the 100 freestyle (1:02.10) and in the 200 freestyle by taking off five seconds for a time of 2:14.80. Moehn was also the highest place individual swimmer, finishing 17th in the 200 freestyle, one spot shy of scoring a point for the team.
Monica Sefcik smashed her season-best time in the 500 freestyle (6:23.21) by 14 seconds. She also cut 0.6 seconds off of her 50 freestyle time with a 31.26.
Putz, a senior, took four seconds off her 100 freestyle time (1:02.86) and 0.6 of second off her 50 freestyle time (29.20).
Mackenzie Hesgard broke 30 seconds in the 50 freestyle with a PR of 29.19. She also set a PR in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:25.35.
The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of Angie Beaver, Hesgard, Oudinot, and Lassen also set a PR with a time of 2:10.42.
