MADISON - The Monroe boys track team received a boost from several relays Saturday at the 72nd annual Madison West Relays.

La Crosse Logan won the event for the third straight year. Monroe finished third (50 points), just nine points behind second place West Bend East.

Monroe senior Brett DeNure won the 400-meter dash in 52.3 seconds, and Jeff Hill finished second in the pole vault after clearing 12 feet, 6 inches.

"Brett looked very strong," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "He took the race out hard. When it was time to make his move, he did so and did so with authority. No one was within 15 meters of him at the finish."

The Cheesemakers took only 14 athletes to the meet, but turned in some standout performances.

The Cheesemakers' 800 relay team of Mason Goff, Bryan Tordoff, Cullen Sampson and Tad Christen finished second (1:38.08), just behind the Hilltoppers.

"The 4x200 was the biggest surprise," Hirsbrunner said. "Their handoffs were pretty good and they raced hard."

The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay team of Caleb Ahrens, Christen, Sampson and DeNure took third with a time of 3:38.

Monroe sophomore Michael Barrett finished third in the high jump (5-10) and Christen took fourth in the long jump (20-8).

The 400 relay team of Goff, Lucas Goetz, Garrett Wyss and Barrett finished seventh in 48 seconds.

"We have a group of guys that like to compete," Hirsbrunner said. "They don't seem to want to lose. We were proud of the way the team stepped up this weekend, especially after the weird school week they faced. Being able to deal with adversity is a key in life and hopefully these guys learned a little something from all of this."
