HOLLANDALE - The Monroe Brewers had a breakout offensive game and knocked off Hollandale Rockies 13-5 in a Home Talent League game Sunday, July 7.
Monroe (5-7) pounded out 13 hits. Monroe's Taylor Riese went 3-for-3 with two doubles to lead the Brewers. Scott White went 2-for-4, Monroe player-manager Jeff Newcomer was 2-for-5 and Ben Korth was 2-for-6.
"We played pretty solid all the way around," Newcomer said.
Korth pitched eight innings to get the win. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out seven and walked four.
"Ben Korth did a great job," Newcomer said. "He kept them off-balance and had a lot of 1-2-3 innings."
Hollandale was led by Shawn Munson who went 3-for-4 and Pete Hefty who was 2-for-4.
Wiota 16, Shullsburg 7
WIOTA - Rooney Janecke and Tommy Meier each had three hits to lead Wiota to a 16-7 win over Shullsburg Sunday, July 7.
Wiota (8-3) slugged its way to the win with five players collecting a multi-hit game. Janecke went 3-for-4 and Meier was 3-for-5. Brad Schliem went 2-for-3, Kory Tuescher was 2-for-4 and Jeff Solberg was 2-for-5 for the Indians.
"They (Shullsburg) are a young team new to the league," Wiota manager Dick Schliem said. "It's a growing experience for those kids. We should be able to handle them."
Solberg pitched five innings to get the win. He gave up six runs, but only three earned on 11 hits. He struck out 10 and walked two. Justin Doyle pitched four innings in relief and gave up just one run on six hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Wiota will play Argyle three times in the next six days. Wiota will play at Wiota Thursday, July 11. They will play a Sunday league game at Argyle at 4 p.m. Saturday and will host Argyle at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 14.
"It will be a tough three games," Schliem said.
Verona 13, Argyle 6
VERONA - Argyle was looking for a season sweep of Verona, the Home Talent League champions the last two years.
Argyle scored four runs in the second inning to jump out to a 4-2 lead. It didn't take Verona long to answer. Verona's Derek Bergenske hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to give Verona a 6-5 lead. With the win, Verona (10-1) now has a two game lead on Argyle (9-3) and Wiota (8-3).
"We didn't really fall apart," Argyle player-manager Travis Erickson said. "We just lost all momentum there."
Verona scored three runs in the fourth and two in the sixth, two in the seventh and two in the eighth. Argyle starting pitcher Jarret Bauman pitched six innings and gave up nine runs on six hits. He walked eight and hit three batters.
Lukas Kolasch tossed two innings in relief and gave up four runs (two earned) on four hits.
Argyle's Tyler Ritschard went 2-for-3 and Drew Nafzger was 2-for-4. Teammate Lance Rossing went 2-for-5.
Verona was led by Justin Scanlon who went 3-for-5 and Kyle Brandt who was 2-for-3.
