MILTON - The Monroe High School boys basketball team used a solid defensive performance to roll to a 72-45 rout of Milton on Tuesday night.

Monroe (4-5, 2-2 Badger South) jumped out to a 35-18 lead in the first half.

The Cheesemakers had 12 players score in the game, including 10 in the first half.

Monroe junior Brayden Zettle scored a team-high 11 points and junior David Keegan added nine points. Monroe seniors Alex Tordoff and Carter Sawdey each added eight points.

"I think it was a huge win," Monroe coach Brian Bassett said. "It shows them that we are better than we played over Christmas break. They got their swagger and confidence back."

The Red Hawks were limited to 33 points for most of the game before they hit four 3-pointers late in the second half.

"Our defense was better than we have been in two or three years," Bassett said. "That was really good."

Monroe will host Stoughton, which is ranked fifth in the WisSports.net Division 2 Coaches poll, at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

"I think the guys are looking forward to the challenge," Bassett said. "We may match up better with them than any other team in the conference because they play with four guards out there like we do. They like to push the ball like us. It may be the first one to 100 wins."
