REEDSBURG - Monroe sophomore Nick Bansley and senior Travis Wolf had breakout performances to power the Cheesemakers to a 31-13 win over Reedsburg in the season opener on Friday.
Bansley scored two touchdowns and had an interception. Bansley rushed for 83 yards on two carries and had an 80-yard TD run midway through the second quarter to give the Cheesemakers an eight point lead. Wolf rushed for 60 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns.
Monroe junior Jordan Montgomery rushed for a team-high 95 yards on 12 carries. The Cheesemakers racked up 412 total yards including gashing the Beavers for 344 rushing yards.
"Coming off our scrimmage I don't know if we had an identity," Monroe coach Toby Golembiewski said. "With our young players we are still building an identity for what we will be good at on offense, defense and special teams."
On the Cheesemakers' first offensive play in the first quarter, Montgomery ripped off a 44-yard run. The Cheesemakers faced a critical fourth-and-3 from the Beavers' 13-yard line and Montgomery had a 4-yard run to keep the scoring drive alive. Moments later, Wolf rammed in for a 4-yard TD run.
Golembiewski wanted to put points on the board and was well aware the Beavers could slow the game down with a methodical flexbone offense to chew up the clock.
"From what we knew they would do, if we didn't get it in there we might not have got it back," Golembiewski said. "It's one of those things where you don't know if that may have been our only chance."
After Reedsburg tied the game, the Cheesemakers answered. Monroe junior quarterback Anthony Hernandez hooked up with Bansley on a 60-yard TD pass to give the Cheesemakers a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter.
"I think that will give other teams something to look at," Golembiewski said.
Once Reedsburg fullback Joe Lichte scored his second touchdown on a 2-yard run, the Beavers botched the snap on the extra point and the play was whistled dead with the Cheesemakers clinging to a 14-13 lead. Bansley then scampered for an 80-yard TD run to give the Cheesemakers a 21-13 lead at the half.
Wolf put the final touches on the Beavers with a 3-yard TD run on the first play of the fourth quarter to give the Cheesemakers an insurmountable 28-13 lead. Monroe senior Dempzy Foley kicked a 28-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter. Foley rushed for 61 yards on 10 carries. Hernandez completed 2 of 6 passes for 68 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
The Cheesemakers had seven penalties for 50 yards and just one turnover. The Cheesemakers' defense limited the Beavers to just 179 total yards.
"We are 1-0 with no injuries," Golembiewski said. "There are a lot of correctable mistakes. It was a great first week."
