MONROE - Freshman Aaron Ziolkowski made sure the Monroe High School boys soccer team would roll into the WIAA regional tournament next week with some momentum.

Ziolkowski scored two goals to propel Monroe to a 3-1 win over Edgerton in the regular-season finale Tuesday at Honey Creek Park.

"It's good for our seeding," Ziolkowski said. "It feels really good (to score two goals).

Monroe (6-10-1) went 5-3 against teams that are in its Division 3 regional grouping. Monroe coach Tony Vasquez will head to Madison for the seeding meeting today. The Cheesemakers are 4-2 in their last six games.

"We probably had two times more shots on goal than they (Edgerton) did," Vasquez said. "It was important to get the win because they are in our regional bracket. Edgerton gets better and better every year."

Ziolkowski put the Cheesemakers on the board first, scoring on an assist by senior Silas Setterstrom at 21 minutes, 47 seconds. About 1 minute later, Setterstrom scored on assists from senior Atticus Pond and sophomore Nick Schumacher.

The Cheesemakers had several golden opportunities to add to their lead. Ziolkowski had a header opportunity go just wide of the goal in the final 50 seconds of the first half when the Cheesemakers led 2-1.

In the second half, Schumacher had two shots that sailed over the top cross bar. Setterstrom had a direct kick in the 56th minute that Edgerton goalkeeper Ryan Tronnes saved. Senior teammate Chase Schulte had a shot go just over the top cross bar in the 62nd minute.

"We had a ton of opportunities," Vasquez said. "We have to keep practicing and working with the ball. Hopefully, we just get better as the season goes on. They are getting better. Part of that comes when they become comfortable with each other and knowing where each other is at."

Ziolkowski scored his second goal by cleaning up a shot by Schumacher at 70:04.

"We really had a lot of nice chances," Ziolkowski said. "It's great that we are getting the opportunities. The shots will come."
