MONROE - The Monroe girls basketball team remains in the driver's seat to win a Badger South Conference championship after rolling to a 60-41 win over Milton on Saturday.
Monroe sophomore Emily Benzschawel scored a game-high 18 points and sophomore Sydney Hilliard added 15 points to lead the Cheesemakers to their ninth straight win. Monroe (14-1, 9-0 Badger South) has a 2 1/2 game lead in the conference over both Stoughton and Madison Edgewood. Edgewood topped Stoughton 65-50 on Saturday and the Cheesemakers will play at Stoughton on Tuesday.
The Cheesemakers, ranked fourth in the Associated Press Division 2 state poll, opened the game on a 14-2 run. Monroe junior Sydney Mathiason chipped in 13 points.
"We have a lot of weapons and different sources of production," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "These girls will share the ball and get it to where we need to get a good shot. That is what is good about this team. Different opportunities will present themselves in different games. We have had girls step up and take advantage of them."
Senior Lexi Hilliard had five points and senior Jordan Hirsbrunner added four points.
The Cheesemakers had no problem solving the Red Hawks' zone defense. The Cheesemakers built a 16-point lead at the half and cruised from there.
"The good thing about this team is they will work for the high percentage shot," Mathiason said. "That's good team basketball we have to keep on playing."
