JANESVILLE - Monroe rebounded from its recent lull by knocking off Whitewater and Fort Atkinson to win the Janesville Quad Tournament Friday night.

The Cheesemakers beat Whitewater 4-0 in the opener and Fort Atkinson 3-0 in the championship game.

"The last couple of games hadn't gone the way we would have wanted," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "The girls made a decision to turn it around. I saw a lot of leadership on the field, especially from our captains. Everyone stepped up."

Gabby Ludwig scored Monroe first goal against Whitewater, just 5 minutes, 2 seconds into the game off of a pass from Alyssa Studer. Kylee Ritschard scored three minutes later to put the Whippets in a hole. Studer assisted the goal.

Ritschard then made it 3-0 in the second half, nailing a penalty kick in the 51st minute. Studer scored the games final goal in the 60th minute off of an assist from Katie Poppe.

"The girls were completely focused and determined, especially against Fort Atkinson," O'Neill said.

Monroe lost to the Blackhawks, one of its conference rivals, earlier in the week 2-1.

Chelsea Haffele opened the scoring for Monroe in the second game, putting one past Fort Atkinson's goalkeeper in the 25th minute. Just 1:30 later, Studer scored off of a pass from Abbey Schneider to make it 2-0. In the 35th minute, Ritschard assisted Studer's third goal of the night.

"We played two great possession games. The girls never gave up," O'Neill said.

Katie Coplien had eight combined saves for the Cheesemakers (5-4-1).
