MONROE - Playing Madison Edgewood on Friday night might create a flood of memories for many starters on the Monroe High School football team.

Edge-wood quarterback Jack Dunn, who is now a backup wide receiver for the University of Wisconsin, torched the Cheesemakers the past two years in Crusaders' wins. Dunn rushed for 220 yards and scored five touchdowns in 35-21 win over the Cheesemakers on Oct. 2, 2015. Two years ago, Dunn racked up 325 total yards and scored six touchdowns in a 40-27 victory over Monroe.

"He's not built like Jack Dunn," Monroe coach Toby Golembiewski said of Will Swita, the Crusaders' new quarterback. "That (running) is not his forte. There are certain things they (Edgewood) may not have shown yet. We know the certain things Jack Dunn has had success with. They have some playmakers maybe not now at his caliber (Dunn), but they will be season standouts for their team. Their quarterback can throw the ball, and they have a quick game outside."

After posting two wins in nonconference games and outscoring their first two opponents 80-13, the Cheesemakers now begin the Badger South Conference part of their schedule.

"This is the start of our next set of goals to be playoff eligible and be as successful as we can in the conference," Golembiewski said. "We are trying to avoid the natural complacency. The sense of urgency will exist through the last play of the game. We just have to focus and understand they may have more focus after a tough loss."

Edgewood (1-1) is coming off a 27-24 loss to Portage in which the Crusaders missed a field goal in the final seconds.

On offense, the Cheesemakers are averaging 422 rushing yards per game. The Cheesemakers have relied on a balanced offense that strives to make defenses cover the entire field.

Senior fullback Isaac Allen leads the Cheesemakers with 282 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Allen is also the Cheesemakers' leading receiver with four receptions for 48 yards and two touchdowns. Senior running back Cole Murray (241 rushing yards and three TDs) and senior running back Jake Kind (162 rushing yards and two TDs) also have gotten off to a fast start.

Portage quarterback Trent Belleau passed for 253 yards and four touchdowns last week against the Crusaders. Golembiewski said the Crusaders used a five-man line on defense against the Warriors, and he's prepared for any defensive front.

Golembiewski said he's incorporated all of the defensive fronts into the Cheesemakers' offensive preparations each week.

"Our goal is to have three running backs get 100 yards or more and Tyler (Elmer at quarterback) be at 100 yards collectively running and passing," he said. "We are very pleased with some of the results we are getting. It still needs work. We are not making the highlight reels yet. A highlight reel would be when all 11 guys are doing what they are supposed to be doing. We are not at perfection yet, but we will get there."

Besides the Crusaders' passing game and triple option offense, the Cheesemakers will need to contain Edgewood 230-pound senior fullback Ed Richards, who rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-13 season-opening win over Baraboo.

"He (Richards) will be a guy we have to be in position to tackle," Golembiewski said. "If everyone does their assignments, we stay disciplined on defense, and everyone tackles, I think we will be in good shape."
