MONROE - Fans will get their first look at the Monroe High School football team during a scrimmage Friday in New Glarus.
The Cheesemakers will compete in a scrimmage with New Glarus-Monticello, Evansville-Albany and Platteville at 6 p.m. Friday at New Glarus High School. There is no charge for the scrimmage.
Monroe coach Toby Golembiewski enters his second season with the Cheesemakers after guiding them to an unbeaten regular season last year and Monroe's first conference championship in 18 years. Monroe finished last year 11-1 and lost to Pewaukee 7-3 in a WIAA Division 3 state quarterfinal game.
Golembiewski is looking forward to seeing how many new starters will respond in their first live action before the season opener Aug. 18 at Reedsburg.
"We will look at the group we think is our ones (first string) and see how they perform," Golembiewski said. "Whether they succeed or fail we will let it play out. Then we will look at our twos."
Each team will have a series of plays on offense and defense during the scrimmage. Golembiewski said each player will be graded on their performance after the scrimmage and then the coaches will begin the preparation for the game against Reedsburg.
"I think all four teams would love to go there (New Glarus) and see their kids do well and not get anyone hurt," he said.
