PLATTEVILLE - Junior Nick Schumacher scored four goals to power the Monroe High School boys soccer team to a comeback 4-2 win over Platteville on Monday.
It was the first game Schumacher has played this season after he missed the first four games due to an academic reason, Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said.
"It was really helpful to get another offensive threat back like Nick," Vasquez said. "He had energy. He wanted to make up for missed time. They tried to get him the ball in areas where he could be dangerous."
Monroe improves to 2-1-2.
Schumacher scored his first goal at 4 minutes, 10 seconds. The Hillmen answered with two goals to take a short-lived 2-1 lead. Schumacher scored a game-tying goal on a penalty kick at 29:04 . After a Platteville player touched the ball in the box, Schumacher scored his third goal of the game and his second on a penalty kick to give the Cheesemakers a 3-2 lead at the half.
Schumacher scored on an assist from sophomore Aaron Ziolkowski to give the Cheesemakers a two-goal lead at 67:44.
Monroe outshot Platteville 13-11.
"Last year, they (Monroe) were known for coming back," Vasquez said. "It was really nice to see. They were patient and didn't panic. I think they are getting a lot more confident with each other as the games go by."
Monroe hosts Sauk Prairie today at 5 p.m. at Honey Creek Park.
