The Monroe High School wrestling team closed out 2011 on a strong note at the Bi-State Classic in La Crosse, with five individuals making it to the second day of the prestigious tournament.

Trevor Gorr posted the Cheesemakers' top finish, placing fourth at 220 pounds. Kevin Klopfenstein was seventh at 138 and Dusty Burkhalter was 10th at 182.

Jesse Keizer (120) and Aaron Hesgard (126) also made it to the second day of action.

Coach Jeriamy Jackson said the Cheesemakers made a good showing.

"All five guys had very good tournaments," Jackson said. "Trevor wrestled very well to finish fourth and probably should have been third. Dusty and Kevin wrestled great as well.

"It's a great tournament to be a part of with the very tough competition. This is why we come here, to get us ready for the state tournament series later in the year. There is still a lot of work to do, but the guys are working hard and definitely getting tougher and better."

Monroe will host Evansville-Albany at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
