MCFARLAND - Monroe freshman Sydney Mathiason had a breakout game as the Cheesemakers rolled to a 63-37 win over McFarland Tuesday.

The 6-foot Mathiason scored a game-high 20 points to lead Monroe to the non-conference win. Senior Alacia Keegan added 11 points.

"It was a good way to end the calendar year," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "It was a nice all-around game. I hope it's one we can build on."

Monroe (3-6, 1-3 Badger South) closed the second quarter on an 8-2 run and outscored the Spartans in the period 18-9 to take a nine-point lead at the half. The Cheesemakers outscored the Spartans 31-17 in the second half.

"I think the big part is we executed and got putbacks," Mathiason said of the big second quarter. "To be able to score 63 points is great. We were able to spread it around."

The Cheesemakers also had a solid defensive game limiting the Spartans to just 37 points and 17 in the second half.

"I thought we did a nice job on defense having to make them work and not giving them easy baskets," Mathiason said.

Cambridge 46, Monticello 30

CAMBRIDGE - Monica Muh scored a game-high 18 points to propel Cambridge to a 46-30 win over Monticello in the championship of the Cambridge Holiday Tournament Tuesday.

Monticello (5-5, 2-1 Six Rivers East) trailed by just two points at the half, 19-17. The Blue Jays took advantage of their post game getting the ball inside to Emily Stein and Elyssa Stein. Emily Stein scored 12 points and Elyssa Stein added 11 points.

Muh entered the game averaging 20.8 points per game, but it was the inside game that lifted the Blue Jays.

"I think they came out in the third quarter really hot," Monticello coach Lori Brokopp said. "They moved the ball very well and were unselfish. They got the ball inside and we had a hard time defending."

Monticello senior Alyssah Kubly and senior Samantha DeVoe each scored a team-high 11 points. Kubly was named to the all-tournament team.

The Blue Jays outscored the Ponies 27-13 in the second half.

"We couldn't get anything going offensively in the fourth quarter," Brokopp said.

New Glarus (3-7) shot 5 of 13 from the free-throw line in the first half, but didn't get to the charity stripe in the second half.

"We were awful," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said of shooting free throws. "That's a little frustrating. I thought we competed in the first half. We got to the basket, but we missed a lot of bunnies and missed our free throws."

New Glarus junior Vanessa Narveson scored a team-high eight points.

Wis. Heights 55, Pecatonica 30

BLANCHARDVILLE - Wisconsin Heights with its size got several second-chance putbacks and knocked off Pecatonica in a non-conference game 55-30.

Wisconsin Heights' Hannah Zander scored a team-high 15 points and was one of three players in double figures.

"I think they attacked our 2-3 zone very well and they have good size," Pecatonica coach Aaron Lancaster said. "We got hurt with their size and they got at least eight second-chance putbacks."

The Vanguards used a press in the first quarter to spark a 17-5 run.

"Their press gave us some difficulties," Lancaster said.

Pecatonica senior Emily Scoville scored a game-high 18 points and Samantha Erickson added eight points. With the loss, Pecatonica drops to 0-9, 0-4 Six Rivers East.
