LENA - On Saturday, the Monroe softball team continued an offensive tear they have enjoyed over the last three games, knocking off Freeport Aquin 11-0 in five innings and Lena-Winslow 13-1 in five innings.

With the two wins, the Cheesemakers (11-7, 6-4 Badger South) have outscored their last three opponents 36-1.

"Things are starting to come around," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "We are starting to hit the ball. That's encouraging."

The Cheesemakers pounded out 11 hits against Aquin. Monroe senior Kasey Gutzmer went 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Katie Holmes and Heather Barta each went 2-for-2, and Ellie Grossen went 2-for-3.

Junior Samantha Solberg tossed a two-hit shutout. She struck out seven and walked one. Solberg is 3-0 with an ERA of around 2.00.

"Samantha has worked hard," Buvid said. "She could be an effective starting pitcher for a lot of teams. She throws strikes and doesn't walk a lot. She's an effective varsity pitcher. We feel good when we play behind her."

The Cheesemakers pounded out 13 hits against Lena-Winslow in the second game. Grossen went 2-for-2. Kayla Updike, Kari Jordan and Barta each went 2-for-3.

Apart from the offense, Becca Armstrong pitched a two-hit complete game. She gave up one run, while striking out six and walking one.

Monroe will now look to keep the hot bats going as they close out the regular season with five straight home games. Depending on the seeding meeting for the regional tournament on Wednesday, Monroe could be in line for two more home games in the postseason.
